Concerts, fairs and rodeos kick-start summer in the Tri-Valley

It’s summertime in California’s Tri-Valley, and the warmth of our temperatures parallels the warmth of our local communities. Our small-town, community-minded region is a great getaway in Northern California to escape the bustle of city life.

Summer brings with it several favorite traditions including Concerts in the Park, the Alameda County Fair, and Weekends on Main the first weekend of every month through Labor Day. We’ve also got some suggestions for celebrating Independence Day in the Bay Area.

Concerts in the Park
Every Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 7 to Aug. 30, Pleasanton’s Concert in the Park series returns. Head to the natural surroundings of the city’s Lions Wayside Park with folding chairs or a blanket to enjoy a variety of musical genres.

There’s something for everyone during the concert series, including classic rock, blues and recognizable modern tunes to sing along to. The events are free for the public to attend.

A little bit country
If you’re itching to get your country style on, the Livermore Rodeo is in town June 8 and 9 at the Livermore Valley Stadium. Gates open at 11 a.m. and events begin at 3 p.m. each day. Vendors, shopping, food, drink and family entertainment are available to explore before and during the rodeo itself.

The Livermore Rodeo includes a variety of traditional animal handling competition events such as bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and more. Tickets cost $27 to $37 per day through Etix, and parking is available for an additional $20 each day.

Alameda County Fair
For a taste of local culture, the Alameda County Fair returns Wednesday to Sunday from June 14 to July 7. Taking place at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, explore all the fair has to offer from 12 to 11 p.m., except July 4, when the hours are 12 to 8 p.m.

Alameda County Fair attendees can find something for everyone in the family to enjoy. A variety of entertainment is on offer, including concerts, pig racing, dog stunt shows and more. Carnival rides and games, food, retail vendors, beer and wine festivals, outdoor movies and other offerings showcase the variety of enjoyment the fair has for those attending.

Tickets range from free for those five years old and under to $90 for a premium season pass and are available online.

Wine and music
Visitors looking to embrace the local wine culture can enjoy an artistic performance at the Livermore Valley Opera’s Opera in the Vineyard on June 23 at Garré Vineyard & Winery in Livermore. Get there when the gates open at 4:15 p.m. to enjoy local wine at its source before the show begins at 5 p.m.

Once the performance begins, attendees will experience mesmerizing opera music in a beautiful vineyard setting. Tickets cost $80 per person and are available online, with charcuterie boxes available for $25 as well.

Celebrating July Fourth
Tri-Valley explorers wanting to experience a hometown July 4 celebration in the region can check out the 2024 Kiwanis-Danville 4th of July Parade from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. along its route through downtown Danville.

The parade, which began in 1975, features a variety of community floats and performances passing by. The 2024 parade’s theme aims to celebrate the businesses of California’s San Ramon Valley.

The Independence Day parade is an incredibly popular local event, drawing a crowd of 30,000 to 40,000 annually. Attendance is free, with seating available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Here in Pleasanton, we have our annual July Fourth Celebration at Lions Wayside Park with patriotic songs and other music from the Pleasanton Community Concert Band. The concert is from noon to 1:30 p.m. on July 4.

The City of Livermore and Livermore Area Recreation and Park District launch their inaugural Fourth of July celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Livermore Municipal Airport. This free family-focused event will feature music from the Groove Objective and food from Amuse Kitchen. There also will be aviation displays and hands-on activities for kids provided by the Quest Science Center.
