Flowers, Birds and Dance, Oh My!

May brings a variety of events that make it easy to experience Pleasanton and the surrounding Tri-Valley.

The Hawaiian May Day Festival (May 9–10) transforms the Alameda County Fairgrounds into a celebration of Hawaiian and Polynesian culture. The two-day event features live music, hula performances, artisan vendors, and global cuisine. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with tickets priced at $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, children, and military guests. Parking is available onsite for $15. Details can be found at www.kumuhulaassociation.com.

Closer to downtown, the 86th Annual Pleasanton Rose Show (May 9) offers a quieter, more traditional experience at the Museum on Main from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, with a $5 entry fee for those submitting roses. Along with the displays, guests can browse local vendors and pick up expert gardening tips. Not a bad way to spend Mother’s Day for flower lovers.

For something a little more unique, the Exotic Bird Mart (May 10) runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fairgrounds, featuring everything from parrots to finches, along with supplies and accessories. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children, with parking available for $15. More information is available at www.exoticbirdmart.com.

From Cage to Stage

There is never a shortage of entertainment opportunities when visiting Pleasanton and nearby, from martial arts to theater.

The A1 Combat Prospect Series (May 23) delivers an action-packed evening of amateur MMA at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 4 p.m., with fights running from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets start around $59, and early arrival is recommended for the best seating. Event details and tickets are available here.

Also, over Memorial Day weekend, Livermore’s Valley Dance Theatre’s Spring Rep (May 23–24) at the Bankhead Theater offers a completely different pace. Performances take place on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., with tickets ranging from $15 to $30. Featuring pieces like Peter and the Wolf and An American in Paris, the program blends storytelling, live music, and a patriotic finale.
