The sky is about to roar as Fleet Week approaches

September 28, 2011 | (0) Comments

Nothing underscores the U.S. military’s unparalleled power like the speed, rumble and deafening roar of its fighter jets zooming through the skies at mach speeds. In conflict after conflict U.S. aircraft have swiftly established air supremacy over its opponents.

This much is indisputable: The United States military rules the skies.

The might, skill and artistry of U.S. fliers will be put on display Oct. 6-11 right on The Rose Hotel’s doorstep when San Francisco’s annual Fleet Week extravaganza revisits the Bay Area.

Performing aerial feats will be the Navy’s famous Blue Angels and the Marine Corps team of Harrier fighter pilots. Watching from land and aboard boats on the San Francisco Bay will be thousands local residents and visitors.

From its humble beginnings in 1911, the Navy’s flight program has grown to become a guardian of freedom for America and its allies.  The U.S. naval aviation program includes three branches of the military: the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard. This year San Francisco Fleet Week spectators will be captivated by the dynamic performances of the Marines AV-8B Harrier as well as by the Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds.

The Fleet Week calendar of events includes:

  • Fleet Week air show practice and performances
  • The Navy Band playing at Pier 39
  • The parade of ships under the Golden Gate Bridge, lead by the USS Carl Vinson
  • Marine Band concert at Huntington Park
  • The 140th annual Italian Heritage Parade, including military marching band and color guards in San Francisco’s North Beach district
  • Ship tour at Pier 30/32
  • San Francisco 49ers salute to Fleet Week at Candlestick Park when the team takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The salute will include band performances and an F-18 flyover during the national anthem

There are many other Fleet Week events. For the full calendar, click here.

This annual tradition is produced by the San Francisco Fleet Week Association, whose mission is to promote humanitarian assistance and disaster preparedness while simultaneously taking this annual opportunity to host and thank the young men and women of the naval services for their devotion to duty in safeguarding the country.

As during past Fleet Weeks, the association is holding a Senior Leader Seminar with participation by the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, FEMA, the State of California, and city, fire, police and emergency management agencies. Also featured will be urban search-and-rescue training conducted by the San Francisco Fire Department.

This is an especially big year for Fleet Week because naval aviation is celebrating its 100th year. It all began shortly before 11 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 18, 1911 when Eugene B. Ely took off from the Tanforan Racetrack in San Bruno, Calif., in his Curtiss pusher biplane and landed it on the USS Pennsylvania anchored off the San Francisco waterfront.

We hope you can join the celebration and have some fun.
