The Rose Hotel is about to get greener

September 07, 2010 | (2) Comments

Guests like you are important to the Rose Hotel.

That means what’s important to our guests is important to us. And what has become clear in recent years is that our guests are big supporters of the environment, renewal energy sources, and green business in general.

That’s why our hotel has – and is – making significant strides in protecting the planet for your sake and the sake of the generations to come.

Our latest foray into green business is the planned installation of an array of solar panels on the hotel’s roof. The zero-carbon solar energy the panels produce will be wired directly into the facility’s electrical system.

The solar project is in its preliminary stages so we don’t yet know what percentage of the hotel’s power needs will be supplied by the panels. However, if the new solar system produces electricity in excess of what the hotel needs at any given time it will literally make our power meter run backward. That surplus power is fed back into the region’s electricity grid and purchased from the hotel by Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the San Francisco Bay Area’s power utility.

Though the solar project is still in planning, the Rose Hotel is committed to this initiative and will have it installed and producing clean power next year.

We are also working with PG&E to determine the viability of installing a charging station on the property for electric vehicles.

Other green business initiatives have already been instituted at the hotel.

For example, each room has a card notifying stay-over guests of the option of re-using their linens to save water and electricity, as well as reducing the amount of detergents entering the environment.

We also stock our rooms with earth-friendly toiletries such as shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, body gels and cleansing bars. The organic products we provide to our guests are harmless to the environment and are not tested on animals.

This is a beginning, not an end. We expect our business to become even greener in the future as technology allows, our business model makes practical and, of course, our guests continue to rate it a high priority.
