Thanksgiving’s coming, time to prep (or win) a ‘turducken’

Turkey or ham? That’s the big decision most people make for Thanksgiving dinner every year.

But anyone who has watched NFL football on Thanksgiving Day during the last 20 years has seen legendary football analyst John Madden offer a more inviting alternative.

It’s called a turducken – a dish consisting of a de-boned chicken stuffed inside a de-boned duck, stuffed inside a de-bonded turkey. (Some people use a game hen instead of a chicken.) The cavity of the chicken – as well as the gaps between the birds – are sometimes stuffed with a seasoned bread-crumb mixture or sausage meat, although some versions have a different stuffing for each bird. The result is a fairly solid layered poultry dish, suitable for cooking by braising, roasting, grilling, or barbecuing.

Madden has made this meat lover’s triple-play famous, explaining its constituents to millions of football viewers and lording over the finished product with a palpable urge for the game to end and the feast to begin.
