A movie guide for fall 2010

November 18, 2010 | (0) Comments

The fall season always brings many fine movies, and with good reason. Hollywood directors and production companies roll out their finest work this time of year in hopes of keeping their work fresh in the minds of Motion Picture Association of America judges for the vaunted Academy Awards.

There are many good movies to choose from. Here are 10 selections you might find exciting, amusing and entertaining – as identified by the Reelz Channel website.

  1. The American. George Clooney stars as a hit man who wants to call it quits but must first complete one last job. Along the way he falls for an Italian beauty played by Violante Placido. The script is based on the 2005 novel A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth.
  2. The Town. If you like actor/director Ben Affleck you’ll probably regard this Boston-based crime drama the second coming of The Departed. If Affleck isn’t your style, this movie is one you want to avoid, even on basic cable. Joining Affleck in The Town are Rebecca Hall and John Hamm.
  3. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. After serving a 20-year prison term for securities fraud, Gordon Gekko, his pinkie ring, and his giant mobile phone are back, as is director Oliver Stone. Michael Douglas makes a repeat performance as Gekko and is joined by Shia LaBeouf and Josh Brolin.
  4. The Social Network. Originally nicknamed “The Facebook Movie,” theDavid Fincher-directed pic is based on Ben Mezrich’s much-maligned book The Accidental Billionaires.  Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Joseph Mazzello.
  5. Secretariat. A Disney take on the true story of Secretariat, the winner of the Triple Crown in 1973, the first horse to do so in 25 years. Marketed as “by the producers of Miracle, Invincible, and The Rookie,” this should be safe, heartwarming entertainment for the whole family. Diane Lane, John Malkovich and Dylan Walsh star.
  6. Hereafter. This Clint Eastwood-directed supernatural thriller is flying well under the radar, but a Clint Eastwood-directed movie opening in October surely signals that Oscar season has begun. Matt Damon plays the starring role and is supported by Cecile de France and Bryce Dallas Howard.
  7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. Not even the venerable Harry Potter franchise can escape the ubiquitous 3-D treatment. This is the seventh and final of the Harry Potter novels written by British author J.K. Rowling. Daniel Radcliffe stars with Tom Felton and Rupert Grint.
  8. Skyline. Sci-fi horror from moviemakers Greg and Colin Strause, most recently directed 2007’s Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson and David Zayas star.
  9. Unstoppable. There’s definitely a throwback plotline in this action picture from Tony Scott (Crimson Tide, The Taking of Pelham 123) about two guys trying to stop a runaway train carrying toxic cargo.  Stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson.
  10. The Next Three Days. Paul Haggis directed Best Picture winner Crash in 2004, and he goes for gold again with a remake of the French thriller Anything for Her, about a man who tries to break his wife out of prison after failing to prove her innocence for a murder he believes she didn’t commit. Russell Crowe stars with Elizabeth Casey and Liam Neeson star.

We hope you like our selections and find many hours of enjoyment on Hollywood’s Silver Screen.
