During the life of the Rosebuds blog we hope the posts we have published made it abundantly clear that the values embraced and espoused by The Rose Hotel and its management include American patriotism in various forms — including support for our troops. U.S. troops have been called upon, in some ways, like never before. Consider that the conflict in Iraq was the longest war in U.S. history.

So we have shown our appreciation for their enormous efforts, and were very pleased that the military showed its appreciation in return. Specifically, the Madden family (owners of hotel) and The Rose Hotel staff were recognized earlier this month for having given complimentary hotel room nights to returning servicemen and women. The recognition came from the B Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

A U.S. flag was awarded to the Maddens and hotel staff along with a plaque that read: “This flag of the United States of America is presented to the Madden family and the staff of The Rose Hotel. This is to certify that this flag was flown in hostile territory over Panjwai District Center, Panjwai District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan from 01 April 2014 to 01 May 2014, during Operation Enduring Freedom XXI. The certificate is signed by Edward R. Sanchez, master sergeant, special forces detachment operations sergeant, and Benjamin C. Tolle, captain, special forces detachment commander.

The plaque and flag are now mounted on the wall of the hotel lobby.

Accompanying the flag and plaque was a Pleasanton [California] Military Families Certificate of Appreciation that says it is awarded to: “John Madden family and employees of The Rose Hotel for your generosity to our returning United States military. Our local servicemen and women are grateful for their complimentary stay at The Rose Hotel upon their return from overseas … Your generous acknowledgement of our troops affirms that Pleasanton Truly honors its military.”

The U.S. flag awarded to the hotel was flown by Sgt. First Class Afshin Aryana, U.S. Army special forces. Sgt. Aryana lives in Pleasanton, Calif., and hotel management and staff were also given a photograph of Aryana with his family after he returned home on April 29, 2014 from his most recent tour in Afghanistan.

We again thank our military personnel for their service to our country, as well as for the kind thanks they have shown us in return. Next time you’re by the hotel, we invite you to visit our lobby and see the plaque and U.S. flag — flown over hotel foreign territory — for yourself.
