The gluten-free diet has become a big deal. You know that gluten can be a major health issue when the Mayo Clinic website weighs in on the subject.
It came into sharper focus for us when one of our guests wrote on a comment card, “Would love something that is gluten free at breakfast like a bread or cereal.” The fact is we have gluten-free items at breakfast, such as fresh fruit and cottage cheese. But we definitely took the hint. Per the guest’s suggestion, we’ve added udi’s gluten-free white and whole grain (sounds contradictory, but that’s what they call it) certified gluten-free bread. We’re also working with our food service distributor on other gluten-free breakfast products, such as waffles.
A gluten-free diet, according to the Mayor Clinic, is a diet that excludes the protein gluten. Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. People avoid gluten to alleviate the symptoms of celiac disease. Gluten causes inflammation in the small intestines of people with celiac disease. Eating a gluten-free diet helps people with celiac disease control their signs and symptoms and prevent complications.
This is no small matter. An increasing number of people are realizing that – even if they don’t have celiac disease – they are gluten intolerant. They discover this by testing how they feel after eating gluten-free for a brief period of time.
The Mayo Clinic website says: Switching to a gluten-free diet is a big change and, like anything new, it takes some getting used to. You may initially feel deprived by the diet’s restrictions. However, try to stay positive and focus on all the foods you can eat. You may also be pleasantly surprised to realize how many gluten-free products, such as bread and pasta, are now available. Many specialty grocery stores sell gluten-free foods. If you can’t find them in your area, check with a celiac support group or go online.”
Given the difficulty of eating gluten-free while traveling, when you don’t have complete control over your diet, we want to do what we can to assist our guests in meeting their dietary needs and restrictions.
