Here’s what Chiquita, NFL football and golf have in common
Those well acquainted with Chiquita International Brands Inc. are also reminded of its subsidiary, Fresh Express of Salinas, Calif., especially this time of year when the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae was played last week.
All of the above have been especially on the minds of the staff here at The Rose Hotel because Fresh Express personnel and guests had exclusive use of our property for a couple of days during the golf tournament, and they played the golf relationship to the hilt – using the hotel’s parking garage to set up their own mini golf tournament with a putting green, and a virtual driving range in the parking lot.
Anthony Munoz – Hall of Fame pro football player and one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history – was among the guests.
This year’s Fresh Express Classic was played April 14-17 at the picturesque TPC Stonebrae course in the hills of Hayward, and was won by Daniel Chopra after heavy fog rolled into the Bay Area and forced cancellation of the final round of play. The 37-year old Chopra had posted a course-record 61 in the tournament’s third round to reach a 12-under 198, one stroke better than Luke List and Russell Knox.
The strong field of 156 included Australian Mathew Goggin, who won the Nationwide Panama event on Feb. 27, and PGA Tour winners Jason Gore, Steve Pate and Jim Carter.
The tournament was preceded by the Jerry Rice Charity Pro-Am.
All the fun and competition was for a good cause. The Fresh Express Classic is not just another professional golf tournament, it’s a community event operated by the PGA Tour and orchestrated by more than 500 volunteers. This year’s tournament goal was to generate more than $250,000 for San Francisco Bay Area charities and non-profit organizations. The Fresh Express Classic has a commitment to donate 100 percent of the tournament’s net proceeds back to local non-profit organizations, including Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jerry Rice’s own 127 Foundation.
Though we’re not much on the golf course, Rose Hotel staffers were glad to have played a role in this year’s tournament.
